The idea for this page got started when i made a long and fruitless search for the tune "Smoke on the water", during that search i found a number of nice MIDI files that could be useful for a personal homepage and / or for other purposes as well.
So here it is, some of the best or most wellknown rocktunes, feel free to save them and use them for any uncommersial purpose. But be aware that all of these tunes not will playback well on the cheapest soundboards, in fact the sound will be best for those who have an add-on board named Roland or what Ya' mah' calle'ms.
So why should anyone use MIDI
on a webpage, instead of other kinds of soundfiles?
Well the primary reason is the MIDI-files usually is smaller than other
soundfiles especially those in wav-format, since a midifile just contains
information of how the soundboard should play and not the sounds themselves.
But that is also the drawback of this technology, you can't get song or
lyrics from a MIDI-file, well except for an occational oohh or ahhh
from a sampled choir.
Well there's always possible to provide lyrics and have your visitor sing the text. In most cases this will offer an additional advantage, you'll be out of range to hear it! :)
For the moment though MIDI is the best alternative for private webpages and small businesses who knows their visitors have the attention span of a gnat, with MIDI you can add a nice touch to a page and still stick to the golden rule that it shouldn't take more than 20 seconds for the page to download completely. But don't commit your website completely to MIDI, this is my recommendation right now -in just 6 months this stuff might be obsolete. So lets see whats happens in the future, with faster modems and connections perhaps "Real Audio" or a similar technology will win out in the long run.Addendum: - Umm that's what i wrote 9 months back, it turned out to be something "similar", in this case MP3 that turned out to be the new great thing.

Even if these MIDI-files might be enough to get you
started, it certainly is a small list compared with what can be found at
other sites.
So to continue the spirit and intention of the e-zone i'll end this with
a recommendation for a fine MIDI archive:
All
the midilinks you could need is found at: Captain
Picards ultimate MIDI-page
-Hey it couldn't possibly be that captain Picard? 8).
