Election for the sami parliament 1997.

Final result of this election:



• SSR/Sámiid Riikkabellodat. 20% of the votes, 6 seats, -1 seat from last election. (~National swedish sami organization)
• Skogssamerna 15% 5 seats, +1. (The forest sami's)
• Min geaidnu/Mijjen geajnoe 10% 3 seats, no change. (Our path, party of the Saminuorra organization)
• Samernas väl 0 seat, -1 withdrawed from this election. (~The sami's weal)
• Samerna för framtiden 1% 0 seat, -1. (~Sami's for the future)
• Total 14 seats.
  The former opposition:
• Renägarförbundet 14% 4 seats. (~Reindeers owners society, organization with same name)
• Samerna 12% 4 seats. +1 (The Sami's, organization with same name)
• LSS 11% 3 seats, no change. (National union of swedish sami's, organization with same name)
• Jakt och fiskesamerna 10% 3 seats +1. (Huntiting and fishing sami's)
• Samisk solidaritet 2% 1 seat. (Sami solidarity)
• Total 15 seats.
  Others:

• Saemien Eatneme 3% 1 seat, -1. (Sami nation, organization with same name)
• Mii Samit 2% 1 seat, new to the Sami parliament. (We sami's)

  Tuesday June 24, declaration of the new native "government".

  We thought that the result of the electon would be an opportunity for new alliances, this option didn't materialize.
  Instead the former opposition bloc will take over the responisbility from August 28 1997, in addition to the partys described above Mii Samit have joined this coalition. Further they have declared that Per Mikael Utsi is to be the chairman of the majority group.

  Last two weeks of August.

  There was some additional political turbulence during the two later weeks of August, one of the representatives for "Renägarförbundet" -Reindeer owners society-. Nils Valkeapää left the coalition since he "didn't want to support a board that didn't have the reindeerherding as their first priority".

  Before the votes had been counted we said: It is quite hard to estimate what the election result will be at this point, one pre-election poll suggests that SSR might lose one chair to Skogssamerna, and likewise in the opposition bloc that LSS will lose one seat to Jakt och fiskesamerna. There’s also a wild card in this election, the new party Mii Samit, at this point it's not known which of the two factions they eventually will team up with -if either. It was somewhat ironic that the Same Ätnam organisation that had been most vocal about the creation of a sami parliament didn’t get more votes. Pre election polls even suggest that they even might lose one of the two seats they hold at present. Lets see how this matched the final result: We got it partly right, as expected SSR lost one seat to Skogssamerna and Mii Samit made it into the native parliament. Samien Eatneme/Same Ätnam also lost one seat. But the rest turned out to be a surprise, as for LSS who made a better election than expected.

  While Richard Doj checks the electoral register to see if Cecilia Persson is entitled to vote, the election supervisor Nils Olofsson places your webmasters vote in the ballot box, under the scrutiny of Paul Doj.	Next one to vote is Catarina Albinsson followed by Ulf Stefan Vinka originally from the mid-western part of Swedish "Lapland".
  The election gave many opportunity to meet people one doesn't see that often. At the left we can see Cecilia Persson, who gossips with election supervisors Vivi Knutsson and Nora Wasara- Larsson. (second and third from left)	The sisters Hanna and Marit Larsson turned up somewhat later. Only one of them voted here, since the other had mailed her vote previously, a procedure that is permitted since many sami's lives in remote locations.
